NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY'S LATE SHIFT DRAWING BOOK
I found this book at the National Portrait Gallery, which was first created in October 2012 as part of their 'back-to-school' art series where they opened their wings to anyone who wanted to try their hand at drawing. I thought it was a nice way to talk about and play with portraits. It's safe to say most of us (by that I mean all of us) aren't strangers to a perfectly chosen profile picture. We think about if we should smile, pout, be candid or composed. The funny thing is, there is with no doubt a single portrait sitter in the history of portraiture who didn't go through the same mental process. It's just changed a little with time. Where the Victorian's wouldn't be caught smiling, what do we automatically do when someone points a camera at us?
